Health Issues
All of my books come from life experience. Smiling Through Your Tears, my latest book, focuses on anticipatory grief - a feeling of loss before a death or dreaded event occurs. You don't get up on the morning with the idea of writing a book about grief, believe me! But the idea for this self-help came to me when I was my mother's caregiver, something I did for nine years.
During these years I wrote a book outline and most of the chapters for the book. After my mother died, however, I could see my grief journey more clearly, and what a journey it was for me. Much of that journey is detailed in Smiling Through Your Tears and if you've read it I would love to hear from you. Nobody is immune from grief and if you have grief stories to share I would like to hear them, too.

Thoughts on Letting Go
Because I'm a grandma I know the time for letting go has come. I'm letting go of many things these days: possessions I've had for years, guilt at not being a better caregiver, grief for friends who have died, being overly responsible, leadership roles, and concern about the future.
I'm amazed at myself. How did I get to this point?
It took decades, but I finally realied that holding onto possessions didn't make me any happier. When I was my mother's caregiver I was the best caregiver that I could be and that was pretty darned good. Instead of being sad about friends who have died I may find joy in the richness of their lives. The world will keep on turning even if I'm not overly responsible. Organizations won't fail if I am not in a leadership position. Worrying about the future is a waste of my present time.
So today I'm focusing on the moment. Certainly, I have had many blessed moments in my life and the blessings keep on coming. My daughters have grown into responsible, giving people. Twin grandchildren walk in the door and say, "Hi Grandma, what's for dinner?" Though I am no longer a leader I continue to be active in my community. As for my husband, he is more devoted than ever.
Though letting go isn't easy, it is possible. The more I let go the freer I become. Letting go doesn't mean that I'm no longer caring or responsible or loving. Just the opposite is true.
In letting go I'm saying I trust life and others to take responsibility for themselves. Life will keep on changing and I will change with it. The ways in which I let go may also change.
Years from now I think I will look back and see I was a healthy person who loved life so much she was willing to let go. Instead of resisting change - including the changes that come with aging - I am welcoming change and the growth that comes with it.

Teens and Tobacco: A Dangerous Combination
Because I care about kids I have been doing some research on teen smoking. The facts on the dangers of smoking are too great to ignore. According to the Centers for Disease Control, kids who smoke cigarettes are "three times more likely than nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine." Source: "Health Effects of Smoking Among Young People."
Share these facts with your kids if they are tempted to smoke or are already smoking.
* Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals and 60 of them - including ammonia, carbon monoxide, and tar - cause cancer.
Source: American Cancer Society.
* The nicotine in cigarettes is very addictive. Teens become addicted to cigarettes faster than adults. Source: www.mayoclinic.com.
* Flavored cigarettes, which are called bidis and kreteks, contain more nicotine than regular cigarettes. Source: www.mayoclinic.com.
* Smoking cigarettes makes your breath, hair, and clothes smell. You become a walking stink bomb.
Source: American Cancer Society.
* Cigarettes wear away tooth enamel, cause cavities (cigarettes contain sugar), and make your gums recede. The brown tobacco leaves stain your teeth brown. Source: www.quittobacco.com/facts/effects.htm.
*Smoking cigarettes deadens your sense of taste. The food you eat, including the pizza you love so much, doesn't taste as good. Source: www.quittobacco.com/facts/effects.htm.
* Smoking and sports don't mix. It is harder to breathe when you smoke cigarettes. Even if you are a trained runner you will be short of breath. Source: Centers for Disease Control.
* Chronic smokers develop lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Cigarettes also cause cancer of the larynx, esophagus, and mouth. Source: Partnership for a Drug Free America.
* Smoking cigarettes shortens your life. If you become a chronic smoker and smoke a pack a day you shorten your life by seven years.
Source: Centers for Disease Control.
The American Cancer Society says cigarettes harm nearly every organ in the body. Talk to your kids about the dangers of smoking. Tell them to say no to cigarettes and yes to good health.

SENIOR CITIZENS: CAN'T WE THINK OF A BETTER TERM?
I didn't give much thought to being a so-called senior citizen until I became one. Becoming a grandmother made me more aware of the term as well. For many, the words "senior citizen" conjure up images of a doddering, confused person, not to mention a lousey driver.
Well, I am not doddering yet, I am not confused, and I am a safe driver. More important, I am an involved grandparent, a productive writer, and a community volunteer. People who don't know me very well are starting to ask, "Are you going to stop writing and retire?"
These people only see me as a senior citizen, not a productive resident of my community. If we put our minds together I am sure we could think of a better term. Experienced citizen. Savvy citizen. Caring citizen. Lots of ideas come to mind. How about some ideas from all you bloggers out there?

Can you use hypnosis and self hypnosis to improve your health?
Well in 1958 the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association and The British Medical Association concluded that hypnosis was indeed a viable therapeutic tool and approved its medical use.
Although there are many theories, no-one really knows how or why hypnosis works. However, the benefits of its use are clear. It has been used successfully in all manner of treatments from IBS to pre-surgery relaxation and post-surgery pain relief.
Olympic athletes, footballers, basketball layers, golfers etc., have known about the power of the mind for some decades now (perhaps the elite knew even further back). It has been shown in medical studies that when you visualise yourself performing a task your muscles respond in exactly the same way as they would if you were actually doing the task. Sports psychologist have used this to their, and their clients, advantage for years now.
The power of the mind is becoming more evident to the medical establishment as well. Everyone knows about the beneficial effects of using a placebo. It seems that if the mind is convinced that something is true then it will make it true even if the situation appears to be the exact of opposite in the 'real world'!
It seems that the quickest way to get the mind to accept a new belief is through hypnosis and self hypnosis. Phobias can be eliminated in one session now and new beliefs planted in the same aount of time.
The use of hypnosis as a weight-loss tool is well written about as its effectiveness in quitting smoking! It has been used very effectively in non-surgical breast enhancement and treating erectile dysfunction. So it is not very hard to believe that it could be used to convince the mind that health is abundant or that a particular unhealthy situation is reversing itself.
Once the mind becomes convinced that an unhealthy situation no longer exists and that health is abundant then just like the visualiser who makes his/her muscles respond to a mental image the person in discomfort or dis-ease can make his/her body begin to repair itself. Makes sense right!
No-one can predict the scope of hypnosis for healing. However, everyone knows of miracle healings that have taken place when a sick person has visited a spiritual healer, bathed at Lourdes, prayed etc. If these healings can take place then I see no reason not to believe that hypnosis can have the same effect.
Unfortunately, no large scale studies have been undertaken, to my knowledge, that have tested the power of hypnosis to cure chronic or terminal illness but I do believe there is enough evidence to suggest it is a very beneficial tool in recovery. self hypnosis
